Libraries

The Library of the Orthodox Academy of Crete (OAC), “The Light”, is a kind donation of Robert Fulghum, an American writer, who covered all the expenses for the building.

Today, the collection of the Library, which is open to the general public and is continuously enriched, mainly consists of donations by important men of letters and includes more than 30.000 volumes and 600 titles related to the press (magazines and newspapers), covering issues of Social Sciences, but with an emphasis on Theology. The collections are mainly in Greek, English, German, French, and Russian, but also in other languages.

In addition, it has the valuable collection of Jacques-Paul Migne’s “Patrology” with writings of Greek and Latin Church-Fathers in 380 volumes, as well as 522 volumes of other useful Theological Works from different publishing houses (e.g. Source Chretiennes).

The OAC, in collaboration with the Municipality of Platanias, completed the digitization of the Library “The Light” in the framework of the programme called “Promoting the Orthodox Cultural Treasures of the Prefecture of Chania”, digitizing 800.000 pages of mainly theological books, 300.000 pages of the Foundation’s archival material, 20.000 photos and 500 pieces of audiovisual material. Our website is avialable to the public at http://www.libraryoac.gr
