Euromediterranean Youth Centre (EYC)

The Euro-Mediterranean Youth Centre (EYC) is an important initiative of the OAC. It was established in June 1988. It is a department of the OAC, located seven kilometers from the Academy in the direction of Kissamos (Kastelli), on an unspoilt track of land with a panoramic view over the Gulf of Kissamos.

The EYC aims to be a 'village' for young people from mainly Europe and the Mediterranean region, although it remains open for youth from all continents. The life of the village is based on two principles: koinonia (community) and creativity.
The young people themselves are involved in building the infrastructure. For the time being, there are only tents and other simple facilities for accommodation, but they meet basic requirements.

Ultimately, the Centre intends to provide a complete series of inter-related activities and services, some of which are already in existence and others are awaiting further development and funding:

An open-air amphitheatre (exists) and multi-purpose hall (to be built).

A traditional Cretan village, complete with a square, coffeehouse, brick oven, wine press etc. (to be built); presently a one-day programme for elementary school pupils to learn more about traditional agriculture (link to sowing) exists.

Staff housing (exists) additional facilities to house many more young people and staff (to be built)

A village chapel (exists)

The large area at the EYC allows for many future developments, such as sports facilities, artistic expressions (an icon workshop exists at the OAC), language training and vocational workshops.

For those who are interested to come to the EYC, please contact the Secretariat at the OAC (email: oac@otenet.gr, telephone: +30 824 022245). Please note that participants are aged generally between 17 and 30, and must be willing to accept the still simple accommodation at the youth centre and participate creatively in the lifestyle and ethos of the centre. Groups usually stay at least three weeks. Travel expenses to and from the EYC must be fully covered by the participants themselves, while the OAC may contribute part of the stay and local travel, if so agreed in advance.
